Doing my part to stop the needless suffering
Friday, June 20, 2008

Well, obviously I am horrible about posting in a consistent fashion. Today's post is an update on a previous post. Last month I posted about my decision to become a vegetarian. Well, I have now taken a step further and have decided to become a vegan. Now, if you do not know, the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan is that vegans do not ingest, wear or support anything that uses animal byproducts. This includes dairy, eggs, leather, honey (some vegans eat honey, its a personal choice) and some extremists will not even eat refined sugar (because it is refined with the bone marrow of animals).
I am an amateur vegan at best. I am still learning what is vegan and what is not. Reading the ingredients of products you expect to be vegan can be quite shocking. For example, Ghardetto's (sp?) has milk in it. What is even worse is the plethora of hidden animal products in a lot of food products. It is surprising how few options for vegan food there actually is in suburbia. However, Whole Foods, Trader Joes and surprisingly, Dominick's carry a selection of vegan food.
All in all my goal with a vegan diet is to do my part to help stop the needless suffering factory farm animals are put through. I am not going to be able to save all the animals in factory farms, but I can do my part by not supporting the companies that treat animals with sub par standards.
What can you do? Well, you can always become vegan, but that is a huge and difficult step. If you are unable to stop eating meat then try supporting companies that have free range facilities.
